Online Garage Sales & Maternity Leave

Hey Everyone!

I hope you are having a great Thursday. Last night, we had a successful initiation for one of our newest masonic brothers. It all went pretty smooth and we were able to make great time, and get home at a decent time.

I have been trying to sell a stove and microwave for a couple weeks now, and finally have someone coming to get the stove. I’m not sure if you all have these, but we have about three different local ‘garage sale’ sites on Facebook, for our area. They look a bit like this:

As you can see it is a closed group. To obtain access you have to request to join, they will then go over your profile and accept you. These tend to keep people within about an hour drive radius. This particular group has over 12,000 members, so it can be pretty easy to sell things quickly. My stove is pictured there and you can see that is is cross posted to two of the other sites. People can just comment or send you a private message about buying your stuff, and you arrange the meetups or shipping. It really is quick and simple. If they stay on there to long they will request that you bump the post to keep it fresh, or mark it as sold to keep out the clutter.Β  If you don’t have a group like this, maybe you could make one! I would have if we didn’t already have three haha.

Work has been slow today. There isn’t anything else I can really say about that haha.

My wife and I are finding that we have been put in kind of a pickle. She is, of course, having a baby at the end of May, and we are running into issues with her employer. She will not have been there a full year when she has the baby, and they are saying she won’t be able to use any kind of FMLA, and once her vacation, Which is slim to none, runs out she will be put on ‘inactive status’ The branch she is out of says that she will 100% have her job back, but that is their word, not the real rules of ‘inactive status’. In reality she isn’t guaranteed shit. At first they told her that it shouldn’t be a problem and that they would work with her, and now it is just a flat no. We aren’t really sure what our options are but we can’t have her lose her job and bring a child into the world. You would think a non-profit company who goal is to help children and adults with special needs would be able to help a trusted and hardworking employee. I told her to go to the top, call whoever you can and see what they can offer. I know the first and second tier ‘bosses’ have limited power but once you get past them anything can happen.

  1. We also have those online local sales sites. Of course people still also have physical garage sales as well.

    I looked up the FMLA requirements and this is what it said:

    Employee Eligibility
    To be eligible for FMLA leave, an employee must work for a covered employer and:
    have worked for that employer for at least 12 months; and
    have worked at least 1,250 hours during the 12 months prior to the start of the FMLA leave; and,
    work at a location where at least 50 employees are employed at the location or within 75 miles of the location.

    Leave Entitlement
    A covered employer must grant an eligible employee up to a total of 12 workweeks of unpaid leave in a 12 month period for one or more of the following reasons:
    for the birth of a son or daughter, and to care for the newborn child;
    for the placement with the employee of a child for adoption or foster care, and to care for the newly placed child;
    to care for an immediate family member (spouse, child, or parent β€” but not a parent “in-law”) with a serious health condition; and
    when the employee is unable to work because of a serious health condition.

    Does your wife think her employers won’t keep their word about allowing her to come back?

    1. We believe that they would hire her back, as they always need people at that level and not many people fit that bill around here. The thing is that their isn’t anything, other than their word, keeping them from hiring another person while she is gone. We won’t be able to sustain if she gets brought back part time or not at all. :/

      It all seems scary and wrong, to think that taking time to have a child and build a family would be detrimental to the very job you need to support said child and family.

      1. Yes, it’s scary. Unfortunately workplaces aren’t always conducive to child rearing.

        I think it will all work out though. I’m sure this isn’t the first pregnancy this employer has dealt with. Perhaps your wife could talk to others who’ve been through this? They may be able to reassure her (and you).

Ah this answers what I responded on your post after this… unfortunately only FMLA provides protection from being let go… and if she’s not eligible for it for having been there less than a year then she has no guarantee of a job. If they do promise she can come back have them put it in writing so she has it just in case… but then you’d have to decide if it’s worth fighting if they try to go back on their word later

      1. Yes, she can use FMLA up to 1 year from the baby’s date of birth. So, if she just took 6-8 weeks off and came back to work until she reached her 1 year and 1250 hours worked she then could take 12 weeks of FMLA.
